Green Game Day Salsa! (Tomatillo Salsa)

Roughrider fans- this salsa is for you!

Here in Rider Country, green is always in fashion.  Especially on game day.

Regardless of which team you cheer for, I know you’ll enjoy this Green Game Day Salsa AKA Tomatillo Salsa.

Tomatillos may look like an unripe (green) tomato, but they are are actually not tomatoes at all, a they fruit from a different plant.  Covered with a papery husk, tomatillos have been referred to as jamberries or Mexican green tomatoes.  You may recognize them as the main component of salsa verde, often found on enchiladas.

This salsa is easy to make (only 5 ingredients) and the tomatillos give this dip a nice tangy flavour! You can alter the amount of jalapeño you use to adjust the spiciness of the salsa.  I used the entire jalapeño plus half the seeds, and it was comparable to a medium heat salsa.  You can always add more heat, so start with less and taste as you go.

Remember, salsa tastes better when it matches the colour of your watermelon helmet. 😉 Go riders!

Green Game Day Salsa (Tomatillo Salsa)

5 ingredient salsa, featuring tangy tomatillos.

  • 1 lb tomatillos (around 14)
  • 1 large garlic clove
  • 1 small white onion
  • 1 jalapeño
  • 25 grams cilantro leaves


  1. Cut tomatillos into quarters.  

  2. Mince garlic and chop onion roughly.  

  3. Cut jalapeño, including seeds if you want a spicier salsa, or disclosing them for a milder salsa.  

  4. Add all ingredients to a blender or food processor (I used vita-mix).  Pulse until well combined. 

  5. Pour into a bowl and serve with your choice of chips or crackers.
