Shrimp Pasta with Tomato Sauce (Gluten Free)

If you have opted for a gluten free lifestyle, this black bean pasta is a great option!  While there are many different options for gluten free pastas, such as brown rice or lentil pastas, I like this option because black beans are so high in protein (22 g per serving).  Not to mention the ingredient list isn’t insanely long (generally not a good sign of health promoting foods).  These black bean noodles (Explore Asian brand) are made with organic black beans and water- that’s it!

I’ve used garlic, basil and oregano to season this pasta sauce, and loaded it with plenty of vegetables.  You could easily make this recipe vegan by omitting the shrimp.  Enjoy your pasta fix!

GF Shrimp Pasta with Tomato Sauce

A gluten free pasta option with a veggie loaded tomato sauce.

  • 1 tsp olive oil
  • ½ a yellow onion diced
  • 4-5 garlic cloves minced
  • 1 can crushed tomatoes (28 oz)
  • 2 tbsp fresh basil chopped finely
  • 2 tbsp fresh oregano chopped finely
  • 3 celery stalks chopped
  • 1 red pepper chopped
  • 1 yellow pepper chopped
  • ½ lb shrimp cooked
  • Black bean spaghetti About 200 g dry (I found this at costco)


  1. Prepare the black bean spaghetti according to instructions, by adding the dry spaghetti to boiling water, reducing heat and cooking for several minutes. 

  2. Meanwhile, create the sauce. Heat olive oil over medium heat in a pan, add diced onion and minced garlic. Saute for a few minutes, until fragrant. 

  3. Add the can of tomatoes and herbs, cook until tomato sauce is heated. 

  4. Add celery, cook for a few minutes. Add peppers and shrimp, and cook for a few more minutes- until vegetables have reached desired tenderness and the shrimp is warmed through. 

  5. Drain your pasta and toss the tomato sauce on top!
