This recipe uses beets and their their greens to create a beautiful pink color (plus they give our bodies a detox boost as beets are a known blood cleanser). So many benefits of beets! I also use hemp seeds for a punch of protein and healthy fats.
Hemp seeds are made up of over 30% fat, including healthy unsaturated fatty acid GLA, as well as both essential fatty acids, linoleic acid (omega 6) and alpha-linolenic acid (omega 3). Essential meaning the body cannot produce these fats on its own, they need to be ingested. I’ve discussed how important fat is for brain function, absorbing fat soluble vitamins (A, D, E & K), and for building and transporting hormones.
Finally, the cacao nibs give the smoothie bowl a fun flavor, but you can disclude them if you like. Cacao nibs are a pure form of chocolate, they are chocolate is it’s raw form (the scoop on cacao here). They are actually dried cacao beans. This superfood is rich in magnesium and high in antioxidants!
The great thing about a smoothie bowl is you can add whichever topping you like… bonus nutrient content! As always, you can simply add more liquid to this bowl to create a smoothie that you can drink on the go!
Hemp & Beet Smoothie Bowl
- 1.5 banana (frozen)
- 1 small beet + stems/leaves
- 1/4 cup hemp seeds
- 2 tbsp raw cacao nibs (optional)
- 1/4 cup Almond mylk (start with 1/4 cup and add more as needed)
Place all ingredients into a high powered blender. If your blender has a tamper this will come in handy. The idea is for the mixture to be very thick, so you can eat it with a spoon. However, you can mix in more almond mylk, if needed, for the mixture to blend properly.
Pour into a bowl and dress it up with fruit, nuts, or seeds of your choice! I used kiwi (green & golden), passionfruit seeds, and Back to Earth’s Weeds & Seeds Superfood Topping.
